ISCC – Certified Biomass and Bioenergy
ISCC is a globally leading certification system designed to promote sustainable and fully traceable supply chains. It addresses environmental, social, and carbon-related requirements while supporting the transition to a circular and bio-based economy. Strong traceability mechanisms ensure transparency and trust throughout the entire value chain.
ISCC certificate
About the certification
The ISCC has been developed as a certification scheme that is applicable worldwide. It covers the assessment of sustainable production criteria, management criteria, traceability documentation and an assessment of greenhouse gas saving calculations.
ISCC EU
ISCC EU is a leading voluntary certification system aligned with the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED), designed to ensure sustainability across the entire supply chain. It addresses environmental and social requirements while placing strong emphasis on traceability, enabling full transparency and credibility from raw material to final product.
How you benefit with ISCC EU
With an ISCC EU certificate, your company can participate as an integral member of a RED certified sustainable supply chain for Europe’s sustainable biofuel market. Your valid ISCC EU certificate, issued by Control Union, is proof of your compliance with ISCC EU requirements on sustainable biomass production, traceability of origin and documentation of greenhouse gas saving potential compared to fossil fuels.
Scope of the certificate
The ISCC certification scopes distinguish the following supply chain acctors:
-
Primary producers, certification not mandatory (farm, plantations, points of origin of waste and residues)
-
First gathering points/collecting points
-
Conversion units (output intermediate products or final fuel)
-
Traders of raw/intermediate materials or final fuel
ISCC PLUS
ISCC Plus is a thorough basis for the voluntary implementation of sustainability criteria in supply chains which are similar to the EU RED. Companies with an existing ISCC-EU certificate are able to extend to ISCC PLUS during the certificate validity period and benefit this way from the additional possibilities an ISCC PLUS certification offers in market applications outside the EU fuel market.

ISCC CORSIA
In the fight against climate change, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has been recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The ICAO Member States have set ambitious targets to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in aviation, for which the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) scheme has been setup. Since February 2021, Control Union is the first recognised certification body for ISCC CORSIA. Furhermore, CORSIA eligible fuels can be produced from already known feedstocks for biofuels and other renewable fuels of non-biological origin such as waste and synthetic based fuels, referred to as RFNBOs (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin).
